To celebrate 9 years of big beats, SuperCharged have two special events coming up:
Wednesday 27th August
SuperCharged 9th Birthday Warm-up Session
Sneaky b2b Adsorb

The clubbing institution that is SuperCharged turns 9 years old this month and to thank all of our regulars who come down, week after week, with smiling faces to get down to the best beats, this night will be completely free. All night long! Resident DJs Sneaky & Adsorb will provide the tunes and might well be joined by a special guest or two on the wheels of steel to help us celebrate.
Friday 29th August
SuperCharged 9th Birthday Party
With an Against The Grain label showcase

To celebrate the fact that Brighton’s numero uno club night has now been running for 9 years, we’ll be throwing one of our infamous weekend parties to celebrate. SuperCharged will be taking over the Concorde 2, with Against The Grain artists, Krafty Kuts, the Freestylers and Deekline & Wizard, joined by Australian breaks champ Kid Kenobi.
And it wouldn’t be a SuperCharged party without our resident DJ Adsorb to warm things up, plus we have grime and dubstep in the bar to add an extra element for all of the beat freaks.
Anyone who reached the last ATG showcase will know that this is an event not to be missed and as it’s a birthday party you can expect lots of presents to be given out during the night.
Concorde 2, Madeira Drive, Brighton.
£11.50 in advance. 11.00pm - 4.00am
Audio, 10 Marine Parade, Brighton.

The inaugural Beachdown festival is just a few days away. Jeff Hemmings looks at what’s in store
The idea came from a stroll on Devil’s Dyke last summer according to one of the founders of Beachdown, Joe Pidgeon (responsible for founding Touch magazine, and with vast experience within the commercial sectors of the music industry) and along with Darren Murphy (ex-Inner Rhythm, the original dance music shop in the North Laine and now occupied by Ju Ju), and a suitable amount of financial backing, they concocted the idea of Brighton’s first ever proper music festival (if you exclude the old Essential festival which had no camping facilities).

Rachel Pegg reveals why popular city nightspot the Joogleberry Playhouse is being relaunched as the Latest MusicBar
As the Joogleberry is reborn as Latest Musicbar, Brighton’s live music scene is assured of a dynamic future.

It is one of the quirkiest venues in Brighton and for many music fans it reflects everything they love about the city. The Joogleberry Playhouse is intimate, stylish and welcoming, with a vibe that suits all kinds of acts from the funky ten-piece salsa band to the a capella performer.
The bar/music-venue/nightclub has the atmosphere of a New York jazz club while remaining distinctly Brightonian – trendy, full of character and a stone’s throw from the beach.

Over the years it has counted among its audience Paul McCartney, Fatboy Slim, Zöe Ball, Alistair McGowan and thousands of other Brighton and Hove residents.

This week the much-loved Joogleberry is to become Latest MusicBar – its first name change in five years, since the Students’ Union moved out of the original Komedia building.

Phil Mills welcomes a lifeline for elderly nurses on the brink of losing their homes
Pam Hanney
There’s light at the end of the tunnel for retired nurses who only nine months ago feared their cottages might have to be sold and they would have to find new homes.
A charity read of their plight and has now offered to take on the running of John Howard Cottages in Roedean Road, Brighton, thereby allowing the 20 ex-nurses to stay put and live out their lives in peace.

Senior executives from Careways Trust, a charity which runs homes for the elderly, met with residents and said rents will have to rise to pay for urgent repairs but he stressed their only purpose was to maintain the status quo and run the homes as they are.
Many of the nurses will make formal replies to the proposal within the next week but some have already given a cautious welcome. Pam Hanney, 79 and a nurse for 35 years, said: “This seems the best and frankly the only option left open. Rejecting it will throw us back into uncertainty.“

Baby Mama (12A)
Director: Michael McCullers

A successful, single businesswoman who dreams of having a baby discovers she is infertile and hires a working class woman to be her unlikely surrogate. This stateside hit stars Saturday Night Live regulars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in a comedy double act full of bite and spite.

Fey and Poehler have been getting a fair bit of press recently for their quirkyfemale credentials but this film does away with the gender debate and proves a funny and cute if notperfect comedic romp.

Royce Ryton’s drama about the abdication of Edward VIII could have been dry. The language and sentiments displayed are of a time long gone. But that is the heart of the story and how timely now.
Run in parallel, the story of David Windsor, torn by his love for twice divorced Wallis Simpson and his duty to serve as king, with the story of Charles Windsor, his failed marriage and his love for a divorced woman and the play has a renewed poignancy.
Patricia Routledge leads an excellent cast with a polished and dignified performance as Queen Mary, allowing the humour to speak for itself and never once clowning – a thing that she can do very well. Rufus Wright plays a passionate King Edward VIII, tinged with real despair.
Darlene Johnson as the Countess of Airlie, is perfect as a humane voice of reason. Above all this excellent production highlights that at one time both the government and the nation truly cared about the royal family and now, frankly, who gives a damn.

Battles’ second Brighton visit was never going to be anything but amazing. A sold out Concorde swells to this blisteringly danceable fusion of rock, metal, jazz and electronica as the visionary US super group triumph once again.
Surprisingly, tonight’s big successes aren’t the singles ‘Tonto‘ or ‘Atlas‘ (although they are great), but the trip-hoppy ‘Leyendecker‘ and plain trippy early EP release ‘Tras‘, which grinds along infectiously. Sticksman John Stanier’s kit (complete with madly high cymbal) is centre stage, highlighting rhythm’s overwhelming importance to his band. As Gloria Estefan might say (sorry, Gloria), the rhythm’s gonna get you, and sure enough, tonight, it spares no one.
